Remember when Hollywood stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds were out and about in Cape Town last year? I don’t know what caused more of a fuss – the hectic action sequences being filmed in certain locations or the big-time celebrity sightings around the city. Well, it wasn’t all for nothing… It was in fact for the new movie Safe House, an exciting action thriller which is hitting cinemas around South Africa this Friday.

Safe House sees rookie CIA agent Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) looking after rogue CIA operative Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) in a safe house in the Mother City. Before turning himself in at the US consulate, Frost had been on the run for years after selling top secret information which made him a wanted man. Weston realises that doing a good job of looking after Frost is exactly what his career needs but it gets really tricky after the safe house is attacked.

What’s great about Safe House is that the story is set in the city – it’s not just a movie that’s filmed in Cape Town pretending to be somewhere else.  As a result, some of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks such as the Cape Town Stadium, Lion’s Head and the CBD are featured in the film. Denzel Washington even sports a South African Police Service (SAPS) uniform in one of the scenes. Check out the trailer below and see what I mean.

The movie was directed by Daniel Espinosa and also stars Vera Farmiga, Robert Patrick, Brendan Gleeson and Tanit Phoenix. It has an age restriction of 16 (V).

This is one movie that I’m definitely looking forward to seeing soon. Safe House opens at Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas on Friday 10 February 2012. Enjoy!
