Local football club Ajax Cape Town will be playing all home games at the magnificent Cape Town Stadium over the next three years. This is great news for the team known as the ‘Urban Warriors’, as it provides the perfect opportunity to attract new fans in the city.

Ajax Cape Town reached the agreement with the City of Cape Town this week. It’s a definite step in the right direction for football in the Mother City. You just have to look at the final game of last season, when 31,000 fans made their way to the stadium to show their support for Ajax Cape Town. The result didn’t go the team’s way on that particular day and they had to settle for being runners-up. But it’s laid a foundation to build on and to go one step further.

With good quality football, a couple of big-name players and a solid marketing strategy which appeals to a wider audience, I think Ajax Cape Town could really do well at the Cape Town Stadium. I’d like to see Ajax Cape Town consider the approach of some of the American teams, where they bring over one or two international stars who are looking to finish off their careers at a smaller club. Besides the benefit of having an international star who can attract new fans to matches, it’ll also be great for the younger players to have someone to learn from. It’s definitely an option to look at.

With that said, the Cape Town Stadium agreement is an exciting move and I’m keen to see how it goes over the next season. Let’s hope Ajax Cape Town can bring home some silverware in 2012. Go Ajax!
