Football fans are in for a real treat as the 2011 European football season reaches its final stages. The biggest talking point at the moment is the huge match-up between Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. And they won’t be playing each other only once. Incredibly, Barcelona will play Real Madrid four times in the space of 18 days in three different tournaments.

The teams will meet each other once in La Liga, once in the Copa del Rey final and twice in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Here are the dates to remember:

  • Saturday 16 April 2011: Real Madrid vs Barcelona – La Liga
Santiago Bernabeu Stadium – 22h00 (SA time)
  • Wednesday 20 April 2011: Barcelona vs Real Madrid – Copa del Rey final
Estadio Mestalla – 22h00 (SA time)
  • Wednesday 27 April 2011: Real Madrid vs Barcelona – UEFA Champions League semi-final 1st leg
Santiago Bernabeu Stadium – 20h45 (SA time)
  • Tuesday 3 May 2011: Barcelona vs Real Madrid – UEFA Champions League semi-final 2nd leg
Camp Nou Stadium – 20h45 (SA time)

The biggest match-up in club football – known as ‘El Clásico’ – will see some of the world’s most famous footballers battling it out for the chance to be the best in Spain and possibly the best in Europe. Barcelona boasts a wealth of talent with the likes of Lionel Messi, David Villa, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, while Real Madrid’s superstars include Christiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Iker Casillas and Mesut Ozil. And let’s not forget the managers – Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho has been waiting patiently to get the upper hand over his Barcelona rival Pep Guardiola.

The goal scoring of Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo this season also deserves a mention – both players have scored over 40 goals in all competitions. That’s an incredible scoring record and it looks like Lionel Messi will finish the season on top.

Which team will you be supporting? I’m hoping that the games be evenly matched and both sides can grab a victory or two to make it really interesting.

Do you remember the last time these two sides met? Barcelona 5 Real Madrid 0 – let’s hope that it’s not that one sided again!

The La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be shown live on SuperSport on DSTV.
