We live in a world where sporting records are broken every year. New superstars break through and set new records all the time. In the world of football, the Brazilian legend Pele still stands out as the best ever. Will another player ever be as good or better? In 2010, one player is standing head and shoulders above the rest. That player is Lionel Messi.
As I write this, I’m watching the Argentina and Barcelona superstar take apart Arsenal in the second leg of the 2010 Champions League quarter finals. The commentators are amazed, the presenters are searching for new words to describe him and the fans are watching in awe at a footballing genius. And that’s just the Arsenal fans!
At 22 years old, the World Footballer of the Year has it all – sublime dribbling skills, incredible finishing abilities and vision and composure from anywhere on the pitch. Add to that the X-factor and you’ve got the best player of the current generation. Can he deliver the same form for Argentina, which he produces week-in and week-out for Barcelona? Argentinean and neutral fans must be hoping so.
Lionel Messi, South Africa is looking forward to welcoming you to the World Cup. If there’s one player who can light up and take the biggest sporting event in the world to the next level, it’s Lionel Messi.

If he can match Pele’s achievements at World Cup level, then he’s on his way to being the best.
