UPDATE: It was announced yesterday that the inaugural Tri-Robben Island has been postponed to the 22nd of September due to harsh weather conditions predicted for this Sunday. Due to the heavy rain and wind forecast for Sunday, Robben Island will not permit ferries to run. Although the weather might improve, the organizers of Tri-Robben island cannot take the risk and cancel at the last minute, as athletes from out of town are travelling to Cape Town for the event. The new date will fall on the Saturday of Heritage Weekend and the race schedule will remain the same. Entries will automatically be transferred to the new date, and refunds are possible.
Tri-Robben Island – the first ever triathlon to be held on Robben Island – will take place on Sunday 9 September 2012. The event will give triathletes the choice of two races – a morning race consisting of a 400m swim, 14km cycle and 4km run and also an afternoon race consisting of an 800m swim, 28km cycle and 8km run.
Robben Island is of course the place where Madiba spend much of his time in prison. This gives triathletes the opportunity to take part in a truly historical and prestigious event. Triathletes taking part in Tri-Robben Island will get to swim in the harbour, while the cycle and running legs of the race will include various landmarks on the island, including the Limestone pits, the Lighthouse and famous WW2 cannon.
Race entries are open for only 27 days leading up to the event – one day for each year that Madiba was in prison and proceeds will go towards the development and rehabilitation of the island.
Entry costs are as follows:
- Morning Race – 16 years & above: R575
(Swim: 400m, Cycle: 13.5km, Run: 4km) - Afternoon Race Solo – 18 years & above: R775
