Shoreline – Quality New TV Series – Monday Nights on SABC 2

[UPDATE: The Shoreline DVD is available - see details below.] I’ve recently watched a couple of episodes of a new South African documentary series called Shoreline on Monday nights on SABC 2. This is one of the most interesting new shows I’ve seen in a while. The series explores the nearly 3000 kilometres of South African coastline and focuses on points of interest, history and archaeology of the vast region.

I got in touch with Tracey Bruton of Cape Town based Homebrew Films to find out a little more about this new documentary series. Tracey says:

‘Shoreline is a South African documentary series commissioned by SABC 2. It is a multidisciplinary showcase of all the unique and diverse features along our coastline – geology, paleontology, history, settlement patterns, marine biology, ecology etc.

One of the main features of this series is that it is presented by a team of specialist presenters – archaeologist Gavin Whitelaw, historian Nomalanga Mkhize and marine biologist Eleanor Yeld. Anchor presenter Peter Butler and his dog Nujack guide our experts on the journey around the coast.

Shoreline consists of 13 episodes and in each episode we visit a stretch of coastline to get a sense of its character and stories to help build a picture of our unique coastline. We reveal how natural wonders and historic events have shaped the lives of coastal communities.’

From the episodes I’ve seen so far I have to say the presenters are professional, the camera-work showcasing the coastline is breathtaking and the content is interesting and relevant. This is the kind of show that I’d like to see on an international channel to promote the natural beauty of our country. Personally it makes me want to jump in the car and go on a long road trip exploring the coast.

I just wish I’d started watching the series right from the start a few weeks ago. I will definitely be getting the Shoreline DVD box set when it’s available after the series ends. [Update: The Shoreline DVD box set is now available - click here to buy it online.]

Cape Point - Featured in episode 5 of Shoreline.

Tracey also tells me that Struik Publishers and acclaimed photographer Claudio Velasquez Rojas, together with content editor Jeannie Hayward, will be bringing out a Shoreline coffee table book in early 2010. This will accompany the Shoreline television series and will recount the journey together with beautiful photographs of our shoreline. Expect more breathtaking scenery on Shoreline.

You can watch Shoreline on SABC 2 on Monday nights at 19h30. The Shoreline website is comprehensive and provides details on episodes, the presenters and behind the scenes information. Check it out at www.shorelinesa.co.za.

Well done to everyone involved in producing this great series and keep up the good work.

I would also like to purchase a box set – love the show. I think my husband is your biggest fan…..

  4. Adrian says:

    Hi Adel,

Thanks for the message. Yes, it’s an awesome show. The team at Homebrew Films and everyone involved did an amazing job. I’ll be buying the DVD set as soon as it’s out after 12 October 2009 and will post details on the site. In the meantime you can have a look at the competition details on http://www.shorelinesa.co.za. 3 DVD sets are given away each week.

    Best regards,

  5. Dylan Ogle says:

This is an absolutely world class production. The graphics, CGI, cinematography is quite honestly nothing I have ever encountered in recent times on South African television. The dynamics of each presenter in this series adds to its overall success. I share the sentiments of the editor of the article that one just wants to get into ones car “going nowhere slowly” style and just traverse our beautiful South African shoreline.

This series has truly unforgettable imagery and clinically dazzling direction. My Monday night entertainment will be poorer come the end of this series. For all our sakes I just hope that the crew behind this series get together again and produce something of this caliber.

  6. Adrian says:

    Thanks for the comments Dylan.

    Best regards,
    Adrian

  7. NICOLENE JANSE VAN RENSBURG says:

shoreline is absolutely great, and so interesting!!!!

  8. Jill Butland says:

This is the most interesting programme we have seen on TV, my husband and I look forward to it and haven’t missed once and we have been to many of the places we have seen so far. I would truly like to get a dvd to take to our children in New Zealand where we are going in November for a holiday to be able to show our grandchildren our beautiful land.

  9. Adrian says:

    Hi Jill,

Thanks for your comment. I agree. If ever there was a series to showcase our beautiful country it’s Shoreline. Have an awesome holiday in November.

    Best regards,
    Adrian

  10. Lawrence says:

Shoreline is probably the best South African show I have ever seen. It had everything, from history to beauty to archeology. And now it is ending. I hope you have another such South African feature lined up. Maybe the N7 which stretches from Cape Town to Pretoria.
    Anyway thanks again.

  11. Glenn Curtis says:

Hi, I enjoy the Shoreline documentary and find it very interesting learning about some more of my country’s true history and how it shaped our present. It makes me feel honoured to be born African. I’m grateful to live in such a beautiful land and seeing this makes me appreciate to want to keep it this way. Thanks for a wonderful programme.

  12. Peter says:

While the visuals of this programme are good – it must rate as one of the worst sound mixes ever in the history of SABC programming. The sound levels are all over the place requiring constant adjustment to volume. Which at the end of the day is sooo irritating you just switch off.
The series needs a remix urgently.

  13. Maureen says:

I wanted to tell you how awesome, interesting, visually pleasing & highly entertaining this programme is………. but all of the above people (apart from Peter!!) have already told you. I can only agree with all of them (APART from Peter) Please let me know when the dvd is available & from where.
    Kind regards
    Maureen

  14. Linda says:

Unfortunately I have not seen the whole series but WOW! What a fantastic informative beautiful programme. I would be very interested in buying the dvd. This is our South Africa. What a fantastic coastline we have, the history that goes along with it, amazing never taught to me or my children at school. See we learn everyday. Thank you for showing us our beautiful coastline and teaching us about it too.

  15. Bert van Vledder says:

The programme was world class – we really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, missed a few episodes at the beginning. Will there be a repeat? Usually, SABC repeat programmes ad infinitum, but this is one we wouldn’t mind seeing again.

    Well done to all involved.
    Bert and Maureen.

  16. pieter smith says:

How can I view the footage about the coelacanths shown last night (5/10) again?

  17. ISABEL says:

JUST LOVED THE PROGRAM. WAS IT THE LAST EPISODE ON MONDAY 5TH OCTOBER? HOW DID NUJACK GET HIS NAME? He is adorable, and Peter Butler has the most amazing presence. THANKS SABC2 FOR A TRULY AMAZING SHOW.

  18. ISABEL says:

Hi again. I meant to ask whether this DVD set will also be available in KZN from the end of October? Is it possible to pre-order a set? We are leaving for New Zealand next year and this is the one Show that I MUST take with. Thanks for your replies.
    Isabel

  19. Adrian says:

    Hi Isabel,

Please see below from Tracey at Homebrew Films in response to your questions:

Shoreline DVD box sets will be available for sale from the end of October 2009, from all major video retail outlets (Musica, CNA etc.). The DVD box set of all 14 episodes will cost approximately R299. (so will be available in KZN from the end of the month).

Please don’t forget to watch the last episode of Shoreline next week: Episode 14: The Making of Shoreline on Monday 12 October. Shoreline would not be complete without showing our viewers how we brought you the incredible images and stories from along our coast.

Sorry, I have no idea how Nujack got his name….

    Thank you,
    Tracey

    Best regards,
    Adrian

  20. Clint Andrew says:

Fantastic series! Just watched the last 2 episodes which we recorded. Will definitely be buying a few DVD sets to give out at Christmas.
Can we expect a follow series up with the same presenters, with more of our true history involving the coastline? Obviously only some of the extremely interesting stories were covered in this series.

  21. Adrian says:

    Hi Clint,

Thanks for your message. Great idea buying the DVD sets at Christmas – I think it would make a great present! Please see below from Tracey at Homebrew Films re your question:

‘Don’t forget to watch the last episode of Shoreline tonight, Shoreline Episode 14: The Making of Shoreline: SABC2, Monday 12 October at 19:30.

Shoreline would not be complete without showing our viewers how we brought you the incredible images and stories from along our coast. Our journey to film Shoreline around the entire coast of South Africa was an incredible experience for our crew. We met amazing people, saw beautiful places, and learnt about so many amazing inhabitants of the shoreline that we knew so little about!

We are at present researching for Shoreline Series 2, which may include the same presenters, although we cannot be sure at this stage. We are extremely excited that a second series will happen!

    Thank you,
    Tracey’

    Best regards,
    Adrian

  22. Debbie Philogene says:

I agree with all of the above. It has been so interesting with snippets of history that I didn’t know about. All the presenters were fabulous and presented their inserts with so much enthusiasm. I am so sorry that it has all come to an end. There must be a follow up area that could be done.

    Regards,
    Debbie

  23. Vivienne Gordon-Turner says:

Brilliant series! I’ve just watched the final episode – making of the series – and found that as fascinating as the series. I’m just sad I missed some of the episodes along the way. So I’ll definitely be buying a copy of the series when it comes out. Great to see Gavin Whitelaw who was a fellow Witsie and Archaeology student in the early 1980s. He and the other presenters did a fabulous job. World class in every way. Congratulations to the Director, Photographer and behind the scenes team.

  24. Dori Verhoog says:

To EVERYONE involved in this mind-blowing series of SHORELINE programmes, my sincere congratulations on a job superbly well done!
Wonderful, SABC2 management for having the good foresight to make such viewing pleasure possible! In this age of mediocrity and it-will-have-to-do, following such a thrilling series week after week was an artistic treat. I have run out of compliments – allow me to predict a SABC TV BESTSELLER!

  25. Esmé Stander says:

I can only say amen to all the above! It was really a great series, hurry up with season 2, I will go out of my way to watch it. Keep up the good work to promote our beautiful country.

  26. Dale says:

  32. D. Henning says:

I live in KZN and have tried everywhere to get hold of this wonderful series on DVD. Please let me know when it will be available now. I asked again today at CNA in La Lucia and they have no idea!! It would make such a lovely Christmas gift and I am really frustrated.
