I’m really enjoying the Brain of CapeTalk competition which is currently doing the rounds on 567 CapeTalk. The competition sees contestants up against each other in a one minute general knowledge quiz on air, with prize money and a spot in the latter rounds of the competition up for grabs.
It all started last week on 6 February 2012 and the finals will be held on 3 March 2012. If you listen to 567 CapeTalk during the week, you’ll hear quiz rounds taking place throughout the day, starting on Kieno’s show in the morning and finishing on John’s show in the evening. The contestant who finishes as the winner at the end of the day goes through to the play-off stages of the competition, which take place on Saturday mornings at various shopping centres in Cape Town.
If you’d like to enter the Brain of CapeTalk competition, then you first need to qualify by answering a set of preliminary questions. You can do this in two ways:
If you answer 60% or more of the questions correctly, then you may be called at a later stage to answer questions on air against someone else.
The play-off rounds are being held at the following venues on Saturday mornings:
11 February 2012 – Somerset Mall (09h00 – 12h00)
18 February 2012 – Canal Walk (09h00 – 12h00)
25 February 2012 – Vangate Mall (09h00 – 12h00)
3 March 2012 (FINALS) – Bayside Mall (09h00 – 12h00)
Feel free to pop down to the shopping centres on the Saturday mornings to show your support. The Brain of CapeTalk competition is brought to you by Dis-Chem. It’s time to brush up on that general knowledge and see how far you can go. Good luck!
5 Gum will be bringing top UK band Two Door Cinema Club to South Africa next month. The indie rock band will be performing in Johannesburg on 2 March 2012 and then in Cape Town on 3 March 2012. If you’re a fan, then listen up as getting tickets won’t as simple as just being first in line to buy them.
First of all, what you need to do is keep tabs on the 5 Gum Facebook page at www.facebook.com/5GumSA or follow @5GumSA or the hashtag #5GumExperience on Twitter. The Two Door Cinema Club concerts in SA are all part of the 5 Gum Experience, so get on the 5 Gum social media pages ASAP to get a chance at tickets, as they won’t be for sale.
Two Door Cinema Club is made up of members Alex Trimble (vocals, guitars, beats and synths), Sam Halliday (lead guitars and backing vocals) and Kevin Baird (bass and backing vocals). After forming in Northern Ireland in 2007, the band worked hard on their sound and material and in 2010, they achieved success with the release of their debut album Tourist History. Since then, singles like ‘What You Know’, ‘Something Good Can Work’, ‘I Can Talk’ and ‘Undercover Martyn’ have become favourites and the band has sold out shows across the world. They haven’t done too badly with the critics as well in the process.
Now, it’s time to see them live in concert in South Africa. Check out the 5 Gum social media mentioned above to find out more information. Good luck with the tickets!
UPDATE: The support acts and line-up have been announced for the two shows. Check it out below:
I got my first taste of the new Hudsons in Claremont the other day and in all honesty, I can’t wait to go back! The restaurant is the third Hudsons to open in Cape Town and it ticks all the boxes – great food and drinks, friendly and efficient service and a comfortable and fun atmosphere.
Hudsons is first and foremost a restaurant that serves beef burgers – and they do it well. The burgers are right up there with the best I’ve tasted in Cape Town. You can choose from sizes of 180g or 250g – if you’re feeling really hungry. Some of the options on the menu include:
‘The Original Royale’ (topped with bacon, cheddar, chilli and battered onion rings)
‘The Wiseguy’ (topped with tomato relish, fresh chilli, jalapenos and rocket)
‘The Player’ (topped with streaky bacon, feta cheese and avo)
‘The Poppa Trunks’ (topped with cheddar cheese, feta cheese, sweet chilli sauce and a chilli popper)
‘The BOOM BOOM Burger’ (topped with tomato relish, biltong dust, chilli cream cheese and sliced battered jalapeno rings)
There’s also the option of ‘sliders’ where you get three smaller burgers – perfect if you’re struggling to choose only one option on the menu. The chicken, ostrich and vegetarian burger options look fantastic as well but I haven’t tried them just yet.
In addition to the awesome burgers, Hudsons also serves salads and pizzas. And don’t let me forget – the chilli poppers are delicious as well. Choose the standard chilli poppers made with three cheeses or go for the bacon-wrapped option with a blue cheese dip.
On the drinks side of things, you’ll find some good beers on tap and the cocktails are massive (and well-priced). If you’re feeling adventurous and you have a sweet tooth, then the spiked milkshake option might be exactly what you’re looking for. Flavours include peanut butter, roasted banana, chocolate brownie, Bar-One and more.
You’ll find Hudsons in Protea Road, Claremont (where Greens used to be). For bookings, phone 021 674 5152. I’ll definitely be back there soon!
Remember when Hollywood stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds were out and about in Cape Town last year? I don’t know what caused more of a fuss – the hectic action sequences being filmed in certain locations or the big-time celebrity sightings around the city. Well, it wasn’t all for nothing… It was in fact for the new movie Safe House, an exciting action thriller which is hitting cinemas around South Africa this Friday.
Safe House sees rookie CIA agent Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) looking after rogue CIA operative Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) in a safe house in the Mother City. Before turning himself in at the US consulate, Frost had been on the run for years after selling top secret information which made him a wanted man. Weston realises that doing a good job of looking after Frost is exactly what his career needs but it gets really tricky after the safe house is attacked.
What’s great about Safe House is that the story is set in the city – it’s not just a movie that’s filmed in Cape Town pretending to be somewhere else. As a result, some of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks such as the Cape Town Stadium, Lion’s Head and the CBD are featured in the film. Denzel Washington even sports a South African Police Service (SAPS) uniform in one of the scenes. Check out the trailer below and see what I mean.
The movie was directed by Daniel Espinosa and also stars Vera Farmiga, Robert Patrick, Brendan Gleeson and Tanit Phoenix. It has an age restriction of 16 (V).
This is one movie that I’m definitely looking forward to seeing soon. Safe House opens at Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas on Friday 10 February 2012. Enjoy!
If you’re a Nik Rabinowitz fan, then this one’s for you. The popular comedian has just released a hilarious new DVD called You Can’t Be Serious which follows on the success of his stand-up comedy shows of the same name.
The DVD features some of Nik’s funniest material which had South African audiences in stitches recently. The Xhosa-speaking Jewish comedian knows how to mix it up, drawing from his own life experiences as well as other hot topics like the ANCYL.
Nik is currently on tour with his new solo show, so look out for upcoming performances. He’s definitely one of SA’s funniest comedians.
If you’d like some laughs at home, then click here to buy the new You Can’t Be Serious DVD. Enjoy!
It’s once again time for our wine fundi Andre Mellish to share some knowledge in the world of wine…
Screw corks!
Greetings! I’m writing to you from Sansibar, the cigar bar at Asara Wine Estate in Stellenbosch where you can sip on some fifty year old Glenfiddich while puffing a Cuban. There’s no single malt whisky for me today, as I can only afford a Black Label while trying to think of an interesting topic to write about. While nothing in particular comes to mind, there is something I’d like to shed some light on – the subject of screw caps vs corks for your wines.
Yes, screw caps are cheaper but that doesn’t mean the wine is rubbish. Winemakers are starting to favour screw caps over cork all over the world and this is simply down to the huge reduction in wine spoilage that it’s responsible for. Some countries have embraced this change quicker than others. For instance, almost all of New Zealand’s fine wines are now under screw cap.
The big obstacle preventing many wineries from crossing over is the stigma that only cheap wines have screw caps. This is simply not true. Yes, it doesn’t look as good and you don’t get that lovely popping sound but just imagine buying a very expensive bottle of wine and aging it for a few years, only to discover when you open it on that special occasion that it’s corked. This is what the screw cap is trying to prevent from happening, so instead of labelling it as cheap, think of it as health insurance for your vino.
Ciao!
Andrew

Ultimate Survival star Bear Grylls will be in South Africa later this month for a quick visit. Fans will know Bear well from his popular shows on The Discovery Channel, where he demonstrates how to survive in some of the most dangerous places and situations that anyone can imagine.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Bear Grylls will be stopping by in Cape Town on his visit. Instead, he’ll be in Gauteng on 10 February 2012 for two functions – one at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg and another at St Alban’s College in Pretoria. He’ll be giving a talk with a Q&A session and there’ll be some autograph signing as well. After that, it’s off to Zimbabwe to film some new material.
Maybe he’ll see what he likes in South Africa and consider returning for another visit. I’m sure that there are plenty of Ultimate Survival fans here in Cape Town who’d jump at the opportunity of seeing the survival star in the Mother City. Maybe next time hey!
Ps. what’s the best Bear Grylls adventure you’ve seen so far? Feel free to post a comment below.
I was shocked to hear that the Domestic Animal Rescue Group (DARG) in Hout Bay has suffered four burglaries in the last week. The robbers made off with everything from computer equipment, surveillance cameras and kitchen equipment, to money in collection tins and even puppy food.
It’s hard to believe that these disgusting criminals could stoop to this level. By stealing essential supplies, they’ve put the animals’ lives at risk. DARG is a non-profit organisation that rescues and rehabilitates abused and abandoned cats and dogs. The staff and volunteers there do amazing work to care for the animals. It’s heartbreaking to hear that something like this can happen.
If you can assist with any food, equipment or donations, please get in touch with DARG on (021) 790 0383 / 2050 or info@darg.org.za. You can find DARG on Main Road, Hout Bay. For more information on the organisation, visit www.darg.org.za. Please help out if you can.
UPDATE: In some good news, Trellidoor SA and Peninsula Glass have come to the rescue by helping DARG secure their premises. Hopefully that’ll keep the thieves away once and for all. Well done guys!

The jazz festival traditionally opens with a free community concert in Green Market Square. This year, the free concert will be happening on Wednesday 28 March 2012 and it’ll feature a preview of some of the artists performing at the festival.
Another big part of the festival is developing local talent and sharing knowledge and experience. To facilitate this, a series of workshops will run over eight days and will cover the creative and business aspects of music. The Duotone Photographic Exhibition will also be back, showcasing some of the best in jazz photography.
Tickets for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival are available from Computicket. Prices range from R400 for a single day pass to R550 for a weekend pass. For performances at the Rosies stage, there’ll be an additional fee of R30 per act.
