I was recently asked to mention the grand opening of the new Cape Quarter Shopping and Lifestyle Centre at 27 Somerset Road, Green Point. I’ve only been to the old Cape Quarter a couple of times for dinner but the grand opening of the new Cape Quarter, which takes place from Saturday 7 November 2009 – Sunday 15 November 2009, looks like it has some fun things happening.

Here’s what’s happening at the grand opening:
- Saturday 7 November 2009: A feast of art
10am to 5pm: Cape Quarter Art – Spend the day at this free art walkabout featuring top artists, photographers and ceramists. - Saturday 7 November 2009: Fashion shows launch Cape Quarter
During the day Cape Quarter Fashion on The Square features creative entrepreneurs in a free eco-fashion show. From 7pm enjoy the latest Spring fashions from fashion stores in the centre. At 8pm City Varsity students show their skills at Body Spectra. See them paint, wrap and mould human canvases to reflect Cape Trade Routes. Disco maestro Honey B provides the music until 11pm. - Sunday 8 November 2009: Symphony of Light
From 7pm to 9pm the unique combination of music and opera from Sterling EQ, Hout Bay Strings and Fire Poi dancers, fuses with light in its many shapes and forms. Dine in any one of the restaurants while you enjoy this spectacular show. - Monday 9 November 2009 – Thursday 12 November 2009: Free music events
From 7pm to 10pm Palm Strings Duo, Divertimento, Uvuyo Trio and Keys & Strings entertain on The Piazza and The Square. They’re just another reason to dine out every night of the week at Cape Quarter. - Friday & Saturday 13 & 14 November 2009: Cape Quarter Food & Brandy Festival
From 10am to 5pm Giggling Gourmet Jenny Morris and Alchemy of Gold bring two days of culinary creativity with the chefs and personalities from the more than 15 restaurants and specialist food stores that are on offer at Cape Quarter. Enjoy free cooking demonstrations, the finals of the ‘Can you Chef?’ amateur chef competition and the ‘Artful Food’ food sculpturing demonstration. - Friday & Saturday 13 & 14 November 2009: Party the weekend away at the Cape Quarter
From 6pm on Friday the free Cape Quarter Cocktail Party moves the tempo up a notch. Expect cocktail flaring, colours, flavours, decorations and funky DJ’s until 11pm. The Cape Quarter Party on Saturday starts with Salsa on The Piazza. Watch the exhibition dancers and then follow the moves. Then head across to The Square to enjoy the lively beat of Cape Town’s top DJ’s, Charl and Nick with VJ artist Inika. The mellow sounds of acoustic musicians and roving buskers add to the mood in the Jarvis Street lounge. - Sunday 15 November 2009: Sunday music at Cape Quarter
On Sunday morning enjoy a laid back brunch from 10am to 4pm on The Piazza or The Square. Enjoy the gentle music of Cape Quarter Classics with a variety of artists entertaining patrons.
