Kirstenbosch Winter Concerts 2009

With winter being upon us in Cape Town one may be missing the ever-popular Sunday concerts at Kirstenbosch during the summer months. All is not lost though as during winter we can enjoy the The Collaboration Winter Concert Series. The concerts take place in the Silvertree Restaurant with featured bands and artists focusing on unplugged-type performances, perfect for the cosy and relaxed atmosphere at the restaurant and perfect for Sunday evenings in winter. A new feature of the concerts this year is the collaboration with a different wine estate each Sunday. Good music and good wine, that sounds like a winner and it’s good to see some whiskeys and brandies featured as well.

I’d like to highlight and recommend 3 particular bands which will be playing in the upcoming months. They are:

• Captain Stu – 9 August 2009: They are definitely one of the most original bands in Cape Town. I saw them for the first time at their album launch earlier this year and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to in the last couple of years. Blending a variety of musical styles such a jazz, reggae and African and with a fun and energetic stage presence, I have no doubt this is going to be a great show.

• Southern Gypsey Queen – 27 September 2009: It’s always a treat to see this JHB band when they visit Cape Town on one of their mini-tours. Mixing blues, classic rock and acoustic influences, this 3-piece band always delivers an awesome performance. The relaxed unplugged atmosphere of the restaurant will definitely show off their versatility. http://www.sgq.co.za
• Flat Stanley – 25 October 2009: Flat Stanley is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s top bands so get your tickets a couple of weeks in advance for this one. With brilliant songwriting, a real connection with the audience and a powerful performance whether it be unplugged or a full rock show, Flat Stanley is one of the highlights of The Collaboration Winter Concert Series.
