South Africa’s movie industry has been making waves lately with the release of several successful films. The trend is set to continue with the upcoming release of the 3D animated film Jock of the Bushveld. The movie is South Africa’s first 3D animated feature and theatre-goers can look forward to a worldwide release in July 2011.
The 3D movie is based on the classic novel which was written by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick in 1907. It’s the story of Sir Percy’s travels in South Africa during the 1880′s with his loyal and courageous dog ‘Jock’ – a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
It’s not the first time that Jock of the Bushveld has made it to the big screen. In 1986, a film adaptation was released and featured Johnny Clegg’s famous song ‘Spirit of the Great Heart’. In addition to the movie’s success, Johnny Clegg’s song also took off and became an international hit. Another film version was released in the 90′s and several play adaptations of the story have also been staged.
The new 3D feature, directed by Duncan MacNeillie, features the voices of stars like Bryan Adams, Helen Hunt, Ted Danson and SA’s very own Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Apart from the final mix which is being done in Hollywood, the film is a full South African production. Johnny Clegg has also composed a new song for the soundtrack.
The new Jock of the Bushveld movie is another exciting step forward for South Africa’s movie industry. It’ll be great to see the movie achieve success both locally and internationally. If you’re a fan of the original, then be sure to go and see the new movie – it’s on the way soon. Enjoy!

I read this book more than once as a child. This was my favourite book. I can wait to see this movie and in 3D!!!!!!! This is really a treat for me. I have told my children about this wonderful book i read and to be able to take them to the movies and watch it with them is really spectacular. They will now see what i have been ranting about for years.
