The Castle Cape Town Tens rugby tournament is back for another round of action this year. The popular event will take place at the Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point on 3 and 4 February 2012, so get ready for a weekend of fast paced rugby, live entertainment and good fun with your mates.

The Cape Town Tens is the brainchild of SA rugby legends Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck. The game merges the technical aspects of 15-man rugby such as line-outs and scrums, together with the speed, space and skills of sevens rugby. Each tens rugby team consists of five forwards and five backs.

This year, the competition is bigger than ever before with 72 teams competing in four divisions – the Premier League, the Vets League and the Heavy and Light Beer Leagues. As always, the tournament will see a few rugby legends participating – look out for the likes of Justin Marshall, David Rees, Leon Lloyd and Malcolm O’Kelly, along with SA stars Breyton Paulse, Pieter Muller, John Allen and Jake Boer.

One of the big prizes at this year’s event is a new Golf GTI, valued at R365,000 and sponsored by Stor-Age. To stand a chance of winning the car, you’ll need to fine-tune those kicking skills and have a crack at the posts. Look out for the Stor-Age branded promotion girls at the venue on the Friday and Saturday – they’ll be taking entries for the competition. Six selected finalists will have to kick at a red box during the Premier League semi-finals on the Saturday. Three will go on to the finals where the aim will be kicking for posts and the Golf GTI!

Entertainment is big at the Castle Cape Town Tens and the 2012 line-up includes GoodLuck, UK pop/rock band The Lightyears, the Graeme Watkins Project and also favourites Me and Mr Brown. In addition, you’ll find beer and food tents and also a kiddies play area, making the event accessible to the whole family.

Tickets for the 2012 Castle Cape Town Tens will be on sale from Computicket for R70 each, with no charge for kids under 12 years old. The event is brought to you by Castle, Powerade, Canterbury and the City of Cape Town.

The Odd Shaped Ball Charity Evening: 2 February 2012

To kick things off, a charity dinner event dubbed ‘The Odd Shaped Ball’ will be taking place at the Grand Café & Beach in Granger Bay on Thursday 2 February 2012. Book a table and chat with legends like Justin Marshall, Dan Lugar, Leon Lloyd, Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck.

There’ll be dinner, drinks and live entertainment on the night, plus a Q&A session with the guys. All proceeds raised will go to the Jag Foundation and the Christina Noble Charity Foundation. Both organisations give much needed assistance to underprivileged kids.

Bookings for tables of ten cost R10,000. You can get in touch with Kirsti Lyall (kirsti@klprsa.com) or Andrea Smit (andrea@klprsa.com) / 021 671 4127 for more info and bookings.

Medac brings TLC to the Cape Town Tens

Medac/Rockets are the official rehab partners of the Cape Town Tens. Physiotherapists will be on duty at the Medac/Rockets Recovery Zone to assist players with recovery and managing injuries over the weekend. A cryo-therapeutic ice recovery pool will be available, while post-game massages will also be on offer to all players.

The 2012 Super 15 rugby season kicks off soon. Pre-season training is well under way and the teams will be facing each other for some warm-up games towards the end of January. The DHL Stormers were superb in the Super 15 pool stages last year, where they eventually finished top of the South African conference. Unfortunately, they went down to a traditionally strong Crusaders side in the semi-finals but this year, we’ll be hoping that the team can go one better and bring that elusive Super Rugby title to the Cape.

The Stormers will miss the likes of star centre Jaque Fourie and the promising Johan Sadie but they welcome back fullback Joe Pietersen from France, flyhalf Peter Grant from Japan and loose forward Duane Vermeulen from long-term injury. Gerhard van den Heever is a new addition on the wing, having moved from the Bulls. The team will no doubt look to Springboks Schalk Burger, Jean De Villiers, Andries Bekker, Gio Aplon and Juan De Jongh for experience and inspiration, while the new up and coming talents find their way in Super Rugby.

The season kicks off on 21 January 2012 with a selection of warm-up games which includes the Neo Africa Tri-Series (update: this is now called the DHL Pre-Season Series). You can then look forward to the 2012 Super 15 tournament which starts on 24 February 2012. Here are the fixtures for the DHL Stormers for the 2012 season.

The Lions will be interesting to watch after their brilliant showing in last year’s Currie Cup. The Bulls will be rebuilding and the Cheetahs will cause some upsets along the way. I’m sure defending champions the Reds and runners-up the Crusaders will once again be tough to beat. By the way, here’s the full list of 2012 Super 15 rugby fixtures, if you’re keen to check it out.

How do you think the teams will do this year? Feel free to post a comment and share your views. Go Stormers!

Western Province vs the Blue Bulls at the Cape Town Stadium… How does that sound? Or would you rather keep Western Province and Stormers rugby at the traditional home of Newlands Rugby Stadium? You may wonder why I’m asking this. Well, the reason is that there’s once again talk of Cape Town Stadium potentially hosting rugby in the Mother City. But it’s only just talk… at the moment.

Cape Town Stadium. Photo courtesy of Bruce Sutherland, City of Cape Town.

Even though the Cape Town Stadium can hold around 10,000 more spectators than Newlands Rugby Stadium, there are reasons why a move to the new venue is not favourable. First of all, Newlands Rugby Stadium has 300 corporate suites, while the Cape Town Stadium currently only has 100 suites. The income received from corporate suites at Newlands is very important to the Western Province Rugby Union, so it’s a key factor to consider. And the cost of increasing the number of suites at Cape Town Stadium is reportedly around R120 million – not exactly small change.

Then, there’s rugby fans’ sentiment towards Newlands Rugby Stadium – the third oldest stadium in world rugby. And it’s not just from the fans. Rugby players (from past and present) will tell you what a privilege it is to run onto the famous ground for a big match. How can you take rugby away from Newlands?

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing one or two big rugby matches at the Cape Town Stadium, with the bulk of the fixtures still at Newlands. Look at the success of the Tri-Nations game between South Africa and New Zealand, which was held at Soccer City in Johannesburg earlier this year. I’ve heard that they are considering the same venue again next year for that match-up. Then, look at the Currie Cup final at Coca-Cola Park (also a rugby ground with lots of tradition), where a capacity crowd attended and showed that two stadiums in one city can both host big rugby matches.

I get the feeling that the powers that be are concerned about the sustainability of the new stadium and they are turning to rugby – something that would consistently bring good crowds to the stadium. Don’t get me wrong, I think the new stadium is awesome and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed going there. But I would rather see them focus on other events which could bring people to the stadium, like the concerts we’ve had this year and events like the upcoming Cape Town Bike Festival.

Interestingly, I see that Cape Town Stadium will be hosting a once-off Heineken Cup rugby match on 14 January 2012. It’s the first Heineken Cup match to be played outside of Europe and sees UK club Saracens up against French club Biarritz in the pool stages. It’s an interesting move and I hope to see a good crowd attending the game. Don’t you think that it would’ve been great to have the South African leg of the Sevens World Series hosted in the Mother City? [UPDATE: The Heineken Cup match between Saracens and Biarritz will no longer be played at the Cape Town Stadium - the parties involved really dropped the ball on this one I'm sorry to say...]

It’s a pity that local soccer in Cape Town isn’t quite big enough yet to regularly fill the Cape Town Stadium. I’ve commented on this in the past and I sincerely wish that soccer could get a boost. It does take time though – look at the example of Major League Soccer in the USA. A plan which worked in the States, was to bring in big name players when they were looking for clubs to finish off their careers in style. Here’s a message to Ajax Cape Town – you have a world renowned brand, a world-class stadium and you’re based in one of the best cities in the world – why not use these advantages to try and bring one or two international players over?

Anyway, let’s get back to rugby.

Where would you like to see matches involving Western Province, the Stormers and the Springboks – at the Cape Town Stadium or Newlands? Feel free to post a comment and share your views. Cheers!

I’m looking forward to the upcoming HSBC Sevens Rugby World Series, which kicks off in Australia on 25 November 2011. With a good mix of entertaining rugby and festive tournaments around the world, it’s no surprise that Sevens rugby has really taken off in the last few years. There’s also plenty of interest in South Africa now with the recent success of the national team – the BlitzBokke.

The 2011/2012 HSBC Sevens World Series has been expanded to include a ninth venue in Japan, adding to the list of hosts which includes Australia, Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Hong Kong, Scotland and England. The South Africa Sevens tournament has moved from George and will now be held in Port Elizabeth at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. It would’ve been great to have the event at the Cape Town Stadium but I’m sure PE will be excellent hosts, as they showed in the Tri-Nations earlier this year. Tickets are available for the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens at Computicket and prices range from R80 to R300. I’ll post information on the fixtures for that tournament as soon as I have details.

Here’s the schedule for the 2011/2012 HSBC Sevens Rugby World Series:

Round 1: 25 – 26 November 2011
Skilled Stadium, Gold Coast, Australia

Round 2: 2 – 3 December 2011
7he Sevens Stadium, Dubai

Round 3: 9 – 10 December 2011
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Round 4: 3 – 4 February 2012
Westpac Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand

Round 5: 10 – 12 February 2012
Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, USA

Round 6: 23 – 25 March 2012
Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong

Round 7: 31 March – 1 April 2012
The Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground, Tokyo, Japan

Round 8: 5 – 6 May 2012
Murrayfield Stadium , Edinburgh, Scotland

Round 9: 12 – 13 May 2012
Twickenham Stadium, London, England

New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji and England will be some of the favourites in the 2011/2012 Sevens World Series but there are always surprises along the way. That’s one of the factors that makes the Sevens game so popular. And don’t forget, Sevens rugby is only going to get bigger, as we look forward to seeing the event debut at the Olympic Games debut in Rio in 2016.

Go BlitzBokke!

We’re lucky enough to have a number of quality 5-a-side soccer venues here in Cape Town. Being a keen soccer player myself, I know that it’s sometimes difficult to find a regular venue, so these facilities can be very handy. If you enjoy a good game of social footie or you’re looking to join a competitive league, then the following 5-a-side options could be exactly what you’re looking for.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a similar 5-a-side soccer venue in the southern suburbs. If you know of one or perhaps there’s something on the way, then please let me know. I’d be interested to get the details. Enjoy the soccer!
