Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras cricket fixtures 2010/2011: SuperSport Series, MTN40 and Standard Bank Pro20 – See you at Newlands

With summer on the way we can look forward to the upcoming cricket season at Sahara Park Newlands. The 2010/2011 season includes the SuperSport Series, the MTN40 Cup and the Standard Bank Pro20 Series.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras are the defending SuperSport Series champions but they lacked finishing ability in the shorter versions of the game last season. With a new coach, Richard Pybus and a new star bowler, Dale Steyn in the line-up, let’s see what silverware the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras can bring home this season.

Since it’s the start of the new Barclays English Premier League season, I thought I’d put together a list of the supporter’s clubs in Cape Town. I’ll start with the bigger teams but please get in touch if you know of any more supporter’s clubs. The more the merrier!

Chelsea supporter’s club in Cape Town:

Local soccer at the Cape Town Stadium

On Friday 27 August 2010, Capetonians can look forward to a double header of local PSL soccer at the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point. Vasco Da Gama will be up against Orlando Pirates at 18h00 and Ajax Cape Town will be playing against Bloemfontein Celtic at 20h45.

Will matches taking place at the Cape Town Stadium generate more interest in local soccer? I think it will make a difference. Of course, matches featuring the bigger teams will always be more popular than other games. As it is with any other sport. With that said, bring on the popular teams and don’t forget the reigning PSL champions, SuperSport United.

A Bafana Bafana match in Cape Town is also long overdue. Come on guys, we’d like to see our national team play here.

This year, Cape Town has three teams competing in the Premier Soccer League – Ajax Cape Town, Santos and newly promoted Vasco Da Gama. On a side note, what ever happened to Hellenic FC? They used to be a very popular team in the Mother City.

Personally, I’d like to see a better marketing and branding approach to the PSL. Give it a better image. Make it more popular. Appeal to a wider audience. Hosting matches at the new stadiums is a good start.

Of course, you must walk the walk after you talk the talk, so the quality of soccer has to be up to scratch. At the end of the day, the game of soccer is the product you are promoting and that must be good.

2010 South African Cricket Awards – All the winners in all the categories

Hashim Amla was the big winner at the 2010 edition of the South African Cricket Awards, which took place in Sandton on 20 July 2010. The Proteas had a mixed season with some highs and some lows. Going forward, the team is gearing up for 2011, which is a World Cup year. Let’s hope the Proteas can change things around and bring home the World Cup. I’ve listed some of their upcoming fixtures here. They’ll be using these matches to fine tune the squad as they work towards the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Hashim Amla had a stellar 2009/2010 season for South Africa and deserved to be recognised for his excellent form. In the end, he took home five of the awards. Here’s the list of all the winners at the 2010 SA Cricket Awards:

Sasol plans to end it’s sponsorship of the Springboks at the end of the year

Sasol is planning to end it’s sponsorship of Springbok rugby at the end of this year. Don’t worry, it’s got nothing to do with the team’s dodgy start to the 2010 Vodacom Tri-Nations (and we’re going to bounce back) but rather it’s due to current market conditions.

The current six-year R150 million sponsorship will come to an end in December 2010. Sasol sponsors the Springboks, the Springbok Sevens team, the Springbok “A” team and also the Under-20 Springboks. Who will be the new sponsor of South African rugby? It’s a lucrative and prestigious partnership to have.

Well done to Jordy Smith for winning the 2010 Billabong Pro at JBay

Jordy Smith made it two great wins for South Africa this weekend, with his brilliant victory in the 2010 Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay. Jordy made South Africans proud, as did golfer, Louis Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 edition of the British Open at St. Andrews. Jordy Smith’s win takes him to the number one spot in the ASP World Title Race rankings. He defeated Adam Melling of Australia in the final. You can check out highlights of the final in the video below, as well as the celebrations after the final.

Well done to Jordy for taking home the title. South Africa’s Sean Holmes also deserves congratulations. He defeated nine-time ASP World Champion, Kelly Slater, en-route to the quarter finals. Here are the 2010 Billabong Pro JBay results and new ASP World Title Race rankings:

World Cup final results and wrap-up

The World Cup has come and gone. Well done to Spain for winning the tournament and well done to everyone involved. It’s been an incredible time to be in South Africa and everyone I know has absolutely loved it. Good luck to the next host country, Brazil, for 2014. South Africa has set a very high standard.

Winner of the Golden Ball Award (Player of the tournament): Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
Winner of the Golden Boot Award (Top scorer): Thomas Muller (Germany). His tally of five goals was equal to that of Diego Forlan (Uruguay), Wesley Sneijder (Holland) and David Villa (Spain). Muller takes the award as he provided assists for three goals, which is the next criteria taken into account if there’s a tie in the goal tally. The other three players did not match or better Muller’s three assists.

Best Young Player of the Tournament: Thomas Muller (Germany)

Jabulani, South Africa’s own version of Paul The Oracle Octopus, also goes for Spain

If you were listening to Aiden Thomas on 567 CapeTalk this morning, you might have heard South Africa’s own ‘psychic’ octopus choosing a winner for the World Cup final, which is taking place on Sunday. Jabulani, whose real name is Houdini, is an octopus at the Two Oceans Aquarium in the V&A Waterfront and he had his biggest audience ever today.

Spain vs Holland - Who will win?

Two feeding jars bearing the flags of Spain and Holland were placed in his tank and after a few minutes, it was clear which one he was choosing. Like the now world-famous Paul The Oracle, South Africa’s octopus Jabulani, also opted for Spain as the winner.

Can you believe people are looking to an octopus to predict the results of football matches? Wow, it’s funny stuff. And adds an interesting spin on things! I’m still holding thumbs for Holland on Sunday.
