The 2011/2012 edition of the world famous Volvo Ocean Race will kick off in Spain – Alicante, to be exact – and the first port of call will be Cape Town. It’ll be the eighth time Cape Town is included as a port in the race. The rest of the course for 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race will be revealed before the end of March 2010.
The race organisers have received over 80 bids from ports around the world wanting to host the event. Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront is the chosen port for the end of the first leg of the event. Leg one is one of the longest in the race and comes in at 6,500 nautical miles. It’s one of the toughest legs in the race and historically the team that wins this leg, is well poised to go on and win the Volvo Ocean Race.
That’s another scoop for Cape Town. Well done to the Mother City.
