If you enjoy your cocktail drinks, then this one is for you. [Thanks to Marlise and Alchemy of Gold for the Igoli brandy cocktail kit, which arrived today.]
INDIGENOUS MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS
Tried South Africa’s version of high tea? It’s a fabulicious fusion of two quintessentially local flavours and combines fragrantly fruity and ultra-smooth potstill brandy with chilled rooibos tea. Served over ice in a refreshingly long highball glass, it’s given a lift with a few wedges of fresh, crisp Granny Smith apple (another local favourite) crushed with cinnamon to release notes of tang and spice. Add a little sweetness with sugar syrup and you have the country’s newest taste sensation on your lips.
Luxurious, sophisticated, healthy (brandy is rich in antioxidants, known to protect against many diseases and premature ageing) with a good dose of all-natural rooibos and totally invigorating, the new indigenous drink is being dubbed Igoli to celebrate its gorgeous golden colour and undeniable local origins. Cheers, Halala or make that good old Gesondheid.
Easy to make and even easier to drink, it’s a whole new taste of home.
The new cocktail has been developed for Alchemy of Gold, a portfolio of internationally award-winning South African luxury brandies.
IGOLI BRANDY COCKTAIL RECIPE:
Ingredients per cocktail:
- ⅓ Granny Smith apple
- ¼ stick cinnamon
- 12.5 ml sugar syrup
- 35 ml Flight of the Fish Eagle brandy
- 30ml rooibos tea
Brew a large batch of tea to use as required, by using a ratio of 4 cups of boiling water to 3 bags of rooibos tea. Make up the sugar syrup by melting 1 cup of sugar in 1 cup of water. Simmer for no more than 10 minutes. Allow both tea and syrup to cool.
In a cocktail shaker or container with lid, use the cinnamon stick to roughly break up the apple wedge into coarse chunks, add sugar syrup, brandy and tea. Shake, strain and serve over cubed ice in a tall glass. Garnish with a slice of apple.
Gorgeously gold, cool and refreshing. The quintessential South African cocktail. A true taste of home.
