The results we need for Bafana Bafana to go through to the second round…

There’s still a chance that South Africa can progress to the second round of the World Cup. Here’s what needs to happen:
- First of all, Uruguay and Mexico must not draw their match. A draw would give them each one point, which would be enough to take them both through to the second round.
- Uruguay has a positive goal difference of three, while Mexico has a positive goal difference of two. Here’s how that affects us:
- If Uruguay beats Mexico 1-0, then Bafana Bafana must beat France 4-0 to progress to the next round. If Uruguay wins 2-0, then we must beat France 3-0. If Uruguay wins 3-0, then we must win 2-0 and so on.
- If Mexico beats Uruguay 1-0, then Bafana Bafana must beat France 5-0 to move on to the next round. If Mexico wins 2-0, then we must beat France 4-0. If Mexico wins 3-0, then we must win 3-0 and so on.
It’s a bit of a long shot but at least France is not looking like much of a team. Their coach, Raymond Domenech has already been replaced, even though he’s still here at the World Cup! It shows in the way they’re playing.
Both matches happen on Tuesday at the same time:
- Tuesday 22 June 2010: Uruguay vs Mexico: 16h00
- Tuesday 22 June 2010: South Africa vs France: 16h00
Now let’s just get the right team together. Show your support for Bafana Bafana on Tuesday. The World Cup is full of surprises, so don’t give up yet.

Hey, it could happen. And like you say, France are looking pretty ordinary. I’m pulling for a big win by Uruguay over Mexico and a big win for South Africa over France.

I’m supporting Bafana Bafana all the way, win or lose, I’m showing my support! Go South Africa, beat the French and show them what we’re made of!

I would love it if Bafana Bafana could pull it off, but honestly, I think it’s too much of a long shot. I just want them to win, at least then they would have a more respectable score in the group.

I think our best hopes would rest on SA beating France 3-0 and Uruguay beating Mexico 3-0. People may be saying that Uruguay is in form… but they capitalized on bad refereeing decisions against Bafana… In this sense, Bafana were not a push over… and we can’t expect them to walk all over Mexico either. France and SA seem to be in the same boat in their performance level… I think it will go pear-shaped in both cases for us… yet I am hoping against all odds that SA rises to the occasion and Mexico has the mother of all slumps.

Well done to Bafana Bafana! They beat France like we knew they could. It was a great performance. And well done to South Africa for hosting a great World Cup so far. I am a proud South African.
