Shakespeare’s ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre: 12 January 2010 – 20 February 2010

The 2010 edition of Shakespeare-in-the-Park sees Antony and Cleopatra taking centre stage from 12 January 2010 to 20 February 2010. In it’s 55th year, this open-air theatre event, organised by Artscape and The Maynardville Theatre Trust, is as popular as ever and attracts an average attendance 20,000 patrons every year. The Maynardville Open-Air Theatre offers theatre-goers a 500m2 wooded park for pre-show picnics and drinks and patrons can then enjoy the main show in a unique wooded 720-seater theatre.

Antony and Cleopatra is one of Shakespeare’s better known tragedies. The Artscape website (www.artscape.co.za (http://www NULL.artscape NULL.co NULL.za/)) describes the play:

For centuries, this tale of the last Queen of Egypt and her torrid, adulterous affair with the Roman hero Mark Antony has captured the imagination. Shakespeare’s brilliant parable about Empire and duty in conflict with folly and lust pitches the feminine, the fluid, the intuitive and the imagination in an all out battle with the masculine, reason, order and Empire-building. With soaring style and searing poetry he mourns the outcome and loss.

Antony and Cleopatra is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s supreme imaginative achievements with Cleopatra his most compelling female role. Marthinus Basson and a cast of award winning actors bring this year’s Shakespeare-in-the-Park to life.’

Antony and Cleopatra officially opens on Saturday 16 January 2010 at 20h15, with four special preview shows taking place  from 12 to 15 January 2010. The duration of the show is two and a half hours, with a 20 minute interval. Tickets range from R100 to R150 each and can be booked at any Computicket branch or online at www.computicket.com (http://www NULL.computicket NULL.com/web/event/antony_and_cleopatra/74672741/34602226). Alternatively, phone Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695. Apparently there is a ‘two tickets for the price of one’ special running on the preview shows (12 – 15 January 2010) and also the family nights (18, 19, 25 and 26 January 2010). Just double check those details when enquiring about tickets.

Patrons are welcome to bring picnic baskets and blankets to enjoy before the show. Picnic hampers can also be pre-booked from the Picnic Company. You can phone them on 021 706 8470 or email info@picnics.co.za (info null@null picnics NULL.co NULL.za) for more information.

I’ve always wanted to attend some sort of open air theatrical event like this, but I don’t think they really have any in my area. They sound like they’d be an absolute dream though… A picnic and a show all together.
